The soil in both fens is mapped in the county soil survey (1977) as Parnell silty clay loam, 0 to 1 percent slopes (Pa), a Typic Argiaquoll. The soil in the fens is actually muck. A dugout (stock pond) occurs on the south end of the calcareous fen and was dug into the calcareous fen. The fens are on the Prairie Coteau.
