Habitat[he(sic) specimen originated from at or near the summit of Ebbetts Pass, >1900 meters and was collected by William Hillebrand. Specifically quoting Brewer from Up and Down California for 29 July 1864, ...went on and camped some fifteen or twenty miles east [of Big Trees]...A Doctor Hillebrand goes with us this trip as visitor. He is a resident of Honolulu, Sandwich Islands, where he has lived fourteen years. He is a man of much ability and importance there a doctor, has charge of botanical and horticultural gardens there, a good botanist...He carried a package of papers with him and collected plants on the trip.____ ________These specimens became incorrectly attributed to Calaveras Big Trees SP, 4700 ft, because the only location information was the Geological Survey Register "plants from Big Trees, 4788 ft, collected by Dr Hillebrand.
