Description[Harrington Road]
Remarks["Also on the ditch further along by road side [Hawthorne Lane] -- toward Tuttles [who lived on Cambridge Turnpike] ap[parently] a low red stemmed (cut off?) a[ster] longifolius -- with generally larger & bluer flowers than the last ['the last' being GH 00872805 of Sept. 24, 1856]. It is ap[parently] A.[ster] logifolius" unpublished passage for Journal Sept. 24,1856; "Apparently the A longifolius varies from very narrow long & tapering leaves more or less toothed or entire with white flowers & smooth stem, to lanceolate toothed leaves 7/8 inch wide -- bluish flowers -- & roughish stem--but always the flowers are large & the scales recurved -- while those of A puniceus are not recurved & its flowers are smaller. The A. longifolius then varies much." unpublished passage from Journal Sept. 25, 1856; "Apparently the A[ster] longifolius varies from very narrow long & tapering leaves more or less toothed or entire with white flowers & smooth stem, to lanceolate toothed leaves 7/8 inch wide -- bluish flowers -- & roughish stem -- but always the flowers are large & the scales recurved -- while those of A[ster] puniceus are not recurved & its flowers are smaller -- The A.[ster] longifolius then varies much." unpublished passage from Journal 25 Sept.1856]
