Remarks["Aug. 16. . . by side of tan-yard, the apparently true Mentha virids, or spearmint, growing very rankly in a dense bed, some four feet high, spikes rather dense, one to one and a half inches long, stem often reddish, leaves nearly sessile." Journal 9: 4. 1856]

Remarks["A very fragrant ap.[parently] introduced mint by the roadside at Oak about 15 rods S[outh] of H[enry] Shattucks out some time -- It comes nearest to Spear mint or M[entha] viridis -- but has petioled leaves -- & long spikes with distant whorls -- [tiny drawing of stamen here] (stamens included [as opposed to exserted]) -- Is it a var.[iety] of M[entha] viridis -- White mint?" an unpublished Journal passage for Aug 15, 1856]
